Research Centre for Italian Culture

The historical and cultural interaction between China and Italy is a fascinating and important chapter in the history of Sino-Western cultural exchange. In view of this, Dr. Richard Man-fai Lee and Dr. Thomas In-sing Leung proposed to establish a Research Centre to conduct academic research in this field.

Lanzhou University, founded in 1909 and situated at Lanzhou, an important resource provision centre for surrounding key military posts along the ancient Silk Road, was chosen to be the home of the Centre because of its rich historical resources and prestigious status as the best national comprehensive university in Northwestern China and one of China’s top ten Ph.D. program providers.

The establishment of the Center is aimed at promoting cultural and historical exchange between China and Italy through cultural research and academic exchange, especially to learn from the historical experience of the Italian Renaissance to inspire China’s own spirit of New Age Renaissance.

It is also aimed at arranging Italian language learning opportunities for students and scholars in the Mainland to facilitate their long-term academic research and studies on Chinese and Italian cultural exchange and Renaissance studies.
